420 CANSail 3&4

Program Description:

The CANSail 3&4 program is comprised of sailors who have achieved their CANSail 1&2 and would like to learn more about double handed sailing. This program builds upon the fundamental skills learned in previous levels, focusing on improved boat handling, sail trim and boat speed. Sailors will also be introduced to basic theoretical knowledge and will be given instruction in power boating safety. At the CANSail 4 level, sailors will be introduced to spinnaker and trapeze. There will be racing opportunities at local regattas.

This program is offered in two four-week sessions.  Upon successful completion of the skills checklists, sailors will be awarded a certificate of achievement.

One or two week sessions are available upon request. Recommended minimum to attain CANSail certification is four weeks.

Optimal Sailor Weight Range:

45 – 73 kg (100 lbs – 160 lbs)
Weight range is the optimal and recommended for performing the required skills for this program.

Learning Outcomes
CANSail 3:
Sailors will learn:
  • Heel to assist with steering and helm balance
  • Trim sail using bridle height, vang, cunningham, and outhaul
  • Roll for optimal speed during tack or gybe
  • Adjust sheeting & balance to accelerate in different conditions

Learning Outcomes
CANSail 4:
Sailors will learn:
  • Demonstrate optimal body position on all points of sail and all conditions
  • Depower using sail controls, steering and sheeting
  • Tack on a header, Gybe on a lift
  • Steer boat and move body position to promote planing and surfing
